Thanksgiving Wishes

It’s Thanksgiving Day today. Rather than getting into anything political, I wanted to post the words to a hymn that’s been going through my head quite a bit today. I heard it earlier this afternoon on public radio, of all places. I was expecting to hear the usual afternoon classical music, but instead they were broadcasting an afternoon of special programming to celebrate the holiday. Some of it was quite enjoyable.

Here are the words:

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing;
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, was at our side, all glory be Thine!

We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be;
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

If you want to actually hear the song, I particularly enjoy this rendition, which was apparently recorded with someone’s camcorder during a church service.

I hope you enjoy, and have a happy Thanksgiving Day, whether you are an American like me, or not.

(And now, I am set to indulge myself in a bit of pumpkin pie.)
