Our Choice

“A Republic, if you can keep it.” – Benjamin Franklin

This is attributed to Franklin as his response to the question, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” asked at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

I’ve seen it written in an expanded form, presumably for the sake of clarity:

“You’ve got yourselves a republic, if you can keep it.”

Franklin understood that having defined the United States as a Republic was no guarantee that an American Republic would actually occur. That guarantee can ultimately and only be provided by the American people. if it’s going to happen, we have to make it happen ourselves.

This is really the central issue in the current Presidential race. Do the plutocrats and their hand-picked candidate with her pre-defined agenda get to decide the future of this country, including our future and the future of our children? Or do those decisions rest, as they should, with We, the American People?

Donald J. Trump, every bit as imperfect as the great men who crafted the Constitution so long ago, is the first candidate in my lifetime to actually give us a shot at the latter.  We would be fools to pass it up.
